Watercolor of our Little White Church by Nancy Murphree Davis

Annandale Methodist Episcopal Church was founded on October 1, 1846. Thus, we will arrive at the 175th Anniversary of our church, now Annandale United Methodist Church, this October.

Founded in 1846 as Annandale’s Methodist Episcopal Church, it was destroyed in the Civil War and rebuilt in 1870. It has been the site of ongoing community service and charity efforts since the day of its founding. The Little White Church hosted Annandale’s first public school in its basement beginning in 1880. Fairfax County’s first Boy Scout Troop, number 150, began its life at the Little White Church in 1912. It still meets next door at the main church campus.

Today the Little White Church, despite its age, continues to anchor and serve our community. It regularly hosts weddings, christenings, and funerals. It is also a venue for small Christian congregations unable to afford a home of their own.

As we arrive at the 175th anniversary of our founding, we’d like to celebrate the past and look forward to the future.

We will rededicate our historic display at a media event with local officials, long-time church supporters, and major donors to the Little White Church 175 project. A small reception will follow.

Sunday, October 3, 2021
Annandale United Methodist Anniversary Weekend welcomes all members of the community to a buffet lunch and open house. Join us for food, fellowship, and to learn more about today’s AUMC. Tour the Little White Church from noon – 4 p.m.

Register to Attend the Anniversary Meal
Following the worship service on October 3, we will have a congregational meal to celebrate our 175th anniversary. And we need to know who will be there so we’ll have enough food and tables. Please take a moment to register now. It will help us plan well. We anticipate having tables set up indoors in Wright Hall and outdoors in the parking lot. We will follow CDC guidelines to ensure everyone’s safety, but for now we are assuming this is something we will be able to do. The menu is still being put together, but trust that it will be delicious. There’s no charge to attend, although you’ll have an opportunity to make a free-will offering. Click here to register.

We are preparing an updated history of the church, with a team reviewing the past histories and filling in the blanks of the last 25 years. Along with this, we will assemble a display on the church’s history in the atrium this Fall. If you have items you thinks should be displayed–photos, collectibles, documents–contact Richard Bass at rbass@annandale-umc.org. We’ll take good care of them and return them after the anniversary.

Work is Needed

Time has not been kind to Annandale’s oldest and most recognizable landmark. Peeling paint, rotten wood, an eroding foundation, all challenge those charged with its upkeep.

As part of its 175th year, we are undertaking a restoration, preservation, and recognition effort. This will include:

  • Repairs to the church foundation
  • Replacement of rotten wood
  • A high-quality exterior paint job
  • Restoration and preservation of the church’s historic bell and outdoor display
  • Establishment of a fund to care for the Little White Church well into its 200th year
  • Establishment of a county historical marker recognizing the church’s history and contributions to the community across the years.

You Can Help!

Our fundraising goal is $50,000. Half for restoration, and half for future care and support.

Donations of any amount will help and are welcome.

You can give online at annandalechurch.com/giving, using the LWC – 175th ANNIVERSARY line. If giving by check, please write LWC – 175th ANNIVERSARY on the memo line and mail your donation to Annandale United Methodist Church, Attn: Garry Bell, 6935 Columbia Pike, Annandale, VA 22003
