Our Mission

Rooted in Christ’s love for us and our call to love our neighbors, we seek to be present in our community, to grow in relationship with one another, to share our resources, and continue to build connections that transform lives. The Mission Center is part of Annandale United Methodist Church’s outreach efforts and one of the ways we show our love and care for our brothers and sisters across all religions and communities.

The Community We Serve

The Heritage neighborhood is a marvelous, multi-national, multi-ethnic community of loving people. Many have limited proficiency or do not speak English, are fleeing oppression and fear in their homelands, and are newly arrived. All deserve our love and support as they seek better lives for themselves and their families. It is an Environmental Justice area in which 60% of students at neighborhood schools receive free or reduced lunch.

Our Leadership

The Mission Center is led by a board of directors appointed by the Annandale UMC Church Council. They are Dana A. Goward (chair), Ann Cooke, Marcia Twomey,  Pam Jones, and Pastor Jason Micheli. We also have a community advisory board, listed below under "A Part of Our Community."

Your Support

The Mission Center serves our community in a wide variety of ways, and we couldn't do it without the generous donations of time and funding we receive. Information on helping out with individual programs is listed below; we are always happy to have new volunteers!

We are presently searching for a Spanish Language Volunteer Coordinator; check the document here for more information.
The Mission Center is funded by contributions from generous individuals and our partner organizations. Unless otherwise specified, the Mission Center Board will use gifts to address the center’s most pressing needs.

Caring for Our Neighbors

Food Ministry, Thursdays from 4-7 p.m.

Annandale United Methodist Church seeks to alleviate hunger in our community by providing food once a week to those in need. We distribute items donated by individuals, nonprofits, farmer markets and local food services and grocery stores, as well as food we purchase. We serve between 350 and 400 families a week, using a client-choice model. Every effort is made to have milk and fresh produce available regularly along with bread and canned and dry goods.

Important: This mission serves community members living in the 22003 Annandale zip code. Clients must register showing evidence (utility bill, driver’s license, etc.) of living in our service area. One registration card/food pickup per household per week. Persons living outside zip code 22003 will be given a small bag of food with information about other food sites in Fairfax County.

We distribute children’s clothing, infant diapers, adult diapers and feminine hygiene products once each month. These items have been donated by individuals, other charities, and purchased for distribution by Annandale United Methodist Church. Seasonally, we also collect and distribute school supplies, children’s Halloween costumes, and toys.
Distributions are Thursdays, 4-7 p.m., with a monthly rotation of products:
  • 1st Thursday - Infant Diapers
  • 2nd Thursday - Feminine Hygiene Products
  • 3rd Thursday - Children’s Clothing
  • 4th Thursday – Adult Diapers
Exceptions to the above schedule
No children’s clothing will be distributed in September. The next distribution will be children's winter clothing on Oct. 17.  Thank you to our supporters who shop thrift stores this time of year for children’s coats to donate.
Donate Items to the Children's Clothing Closet!
We accept clothing and shoes for any season for newborns to age 16. We also always need grocery-sized plastic bags! Please place donations in the box at the coat rack at AUMC main campus or in the box outside the Mission Center door (please no household items!). Contact Pam Adams at majmommd@msn.com to make other arrangements or to make a cash donation to support clothing purchases.

Community Garden

Hands on Harvest (HOH) is an all-volunteer Fairfax charity that establishes and operates community gardens to improve access to fresh produce and reduce food waste. AUMC is finalizing a partnership agreement with HOH for a community garden at the Mission Center. Over fall  2024 and winter 2024-2025 the garden beds will be established and fenced in and a shed and picnic tables will be installed. Members of the Heritage Community will be able to participate in the garden which will be coordinated and operated by HOH.

As this project progresses, HOH will reach out to community members and make announcements about how to participate as a gardener. Check back for more information as it becomes available.
